Visa may be required depending on country of origin issuing passport. All students are responsible for obtaining correct travel documents.
Do I need to know the language of the country to participate? What language will we be speaking?
All trips include a designated 24-hour tour director who has knowledge and expertise in the culture and language. However, please be aware that the locals in each area will be speaking their native language.
Can I continue to take courses at Walden during the dates of the trip?
If you would like to continue to take classes while you are on the trip, please speak to your instructor. If you have any concerns or if your instructor requests more information, please let the study abroad team know and we can reach out to your instructor after you speak to him or her.
Can international students participate?
All students are welcome to attend, but if you are traveling from an international location you may want to make your own flight arrangements, as going through the vendor might be more expensive. You will have the option to request pricing through the vendor when you register for the trip. In addition, please read on for important information regarding travel documents, such as visas and passports.
Can I receive academic credit toward my program?
At this time, Walden University offers five elective quarter credits to undergraduate students who take IDST 4002 - Seminar in Public Service or IDST 4004E - Seminar with Study Abroad. Undergraduate students are encouraged to speak to their student success advisor to ensure that elective credits are available within their program. At this time, graduate and doctoral students are unable to receive academic credit, but are welcome to attend all trips—as are Walden alumni, staff, faculty, and friends and family of Walden community members.
What are the funding options for these trips?
Financial aid will cover only the tuition of IDST 4002 or 4004E, depending on your financial aid assistance package. Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid with any questions. At this time, there are no travel stipends or scholarships, but students will be notified if they become available.
How much money should I bring?
All learners should budget appropriately for tips for each trip and also plan for items mentioned in the “NOT included in program cost” section of the table on the Walden Study Abroad page. Learners should also plan to bring money for beverages, daily lunches, and some dinners, as well as any persona pending needs.
What is group travel? What is the difference between a vacation and an educational tour?
Group travel provides learners the opportunity to travel with a group of anywhere from 10–35 learners. Group travel requires being on a coach bus with the group, taking walking tours within the city together as a group, and also staying in the same hotel with the group in twin rooms. An educational tour provides education, cultural experiences, and new perspectives for each learner, as compared to a vacation where there may not be scheduled events and the individual may go as he or she pleases throughout the vacation.
How old do you have to be to travel?

What are the rooming arrangements? Can I request to be placed with a specific person?
All rooms are designed to accommodate two adults of the same sex and come with two twin beds. All learners have the option to pay an additional fee for a private room. The hotels are 3-star hotels and have private bathrooms within the room. You can make a roommate request through firstname.lastname@example.org after registering for the trip.
Will I need a passport for traveling?
Yes. You must have a valid U.S. passport that expires no earlier than six months after the departure date.
Non-U.S. Citizens: If you do not have a U.S. passport, you are responsible for contacting your home country’s embassy to determine the necessary travel documents.
Will there be any free time to visit with family and friends?
Most evenings are free if no travel has already been scheduled.
What kind of preparation will I receive if I decide to go on an Educational Tour or Public Service Project?
All learners will be invited to a general information session about the trips as well as an individual webinar that includes cultural, historical, and overall information about the location. In addition, you will receive a media list with more information about the location prior to the departure date. Once all learners have arrived at the location, there will be a welcome dinner and orientation with Walden staff and the tour director.
Do I need any vaccinations?
There are no required vaccinations for these trips, but as always, we recommend checking with your doctor if you have any travel concerns, such as motion sickness.
The Walden Study Abroad Web page mentions, “If you are ready to challenge yourself physically… ” What does that mean?
All trips are intense, involving 10–12 hour days, because learners spend such a short period of time in one location. The schedules are designed to take full advantage of the many activities each country has to offer. Depending on the country, a great deal of walking may be needed to navigate throughout the cities, especially as some areas may not allow buses. Be prepared to walk, and pack comfortable shoes.
What should I pack?
Each learner will receive a recommended packing list prior to departure, but please note that each country has cultural clothing expectations. For example, when visiting churches in Italy, shorts and hats are not allowed and shoulders need to be covered. Also, we strongly encourage all learners to pack one or two pairs of comfortable walking shoes. No dress shoes are needed for any of the trips.
It is extremely important to pack light, as there will be no one to assist with luggage. Only pack what you can carry or pull on your own—possibly even uphill, in some locations.
